The Institute of Humanities, the Department of Foreign Languages and Translation, in collaboration with the post-graduate program of Applied Linguistics at the University of Brasilia, have the honor to announce the II International Congress of Phraseology and Paremiology (PIFC) and the I Brazilian Congress of Phraseology (CBF), both to be held in Brasilia from 13 to 17 November 2011 with the theme: Current trends in research in descriptive and applied paremiology and phraseology.
Phraseologisms, as collective and traditional formulaic language, reflect the mentality of a nation, its history, customs, beliefs and affective states, for all those who are able to recognize them and investigate the world view they reflect.
Thus, over the centuries, these idioms and formulae were molded in a wide range of expressions -often characterized as "popular ", which would bear the experiences of a generation or more applied in everyday life. The recognition of phraseology is the result not only of a broad and vigorous research activity, but also of the publication of several specialized dictionaries, made from given theoretical perspectives, and also of the attention given to this subject in works on lexical semantics, lexicology, foreign vocabulary teaching, among others.
Paremiology (paroimía "proverb" + logos , discourse/treatise) is the science that studies folk sayings, proverbs and other phraseological statements that are intended to convey some traditional knowledge based on experience. Compared paremiology establishes relationships between the proverbs and other sententious statements from different languages and cultures.
Therefore, the phraseology and paremiology come together once more to show the contemporary trends in these areas according to descriptive and applied studies of their different situations of use.
Taking into account the important tradition inheritated from previous specielized events, the First International Conference on Phraseology and Paremiology, held in Santiago de Compostela in 2006, the conferences organized by EUROPHRAS (the last one held in Granada in June 2010), as well as the I Phraseology seminar organized at the University of Brasilia in October 2010, we can state that one of the goals of these conferences is to broaden the scope of discussions, in order to include new topics related with other areas.
The event will include mainly lectures, workshops and sessions of simultaneous communications, involving renowned national and international specialists (whose names will be published soon), and will reserve a space for the different (thematic) working groups.
The debates will be grouped according to the following themes:
1) Phraseology and Paremiology: General theoretical issues
2) Phraseography and Paremiography
3) Translation in Phraseology and in Paremiology
4) Cultural aspects of Phraseology and Paremiology
5) Diachronic studies of Phraseology and Paremiology
6) Phraseology in teaching of mother tongue and/or foreign langages
7) Corpus-based studies on Phraseology and Paremiology
8) Contrastive Phraseology and Paremiology
The objectives of the events are :
• Make the specialists meet together to establish the state of research in phraseology and paremiology;
• Show the new trends in phraseological and paremiological studies;
• Encourage research in the field of phraseology and paremiology, generating a debate about theories and research methods related to language and its role in knowledge construction;
• Promote the exchange, debate and exchange of experiences between local and foreign teachers and/or researchers;
• Find new alternatives to include new phraseological and paremiological aspects within the teaching and learning of languages.
• Prepare an agenda for applied research in Phraseology and Paremiology.
• Encouraging scientific production in the area of Phraseology and Paremiology by means of joint projects and publications;
• Encourage the dissemination of knowledge and models in the area of Phraseology and Paremiology inside Brazil
